Introduction
• Young people join Scouting for activities and adventure.
• We need to make sure we fulfil those wants and needs, but in the safest possible way.
• All Leaders must follow best practice to ensure the safety of young people.
• We need to provide safe activities that develop young people and offer: .jpg)
o Excitement but not danger
o Adventure but not hazard
• The Rules concerning Activities are set out in:
‘Policy, Organisation & Rules’ – Chapter 9
• A recommended starting point for anyone looking for information about Activities, is the ‘A to Z Directory of Activities’, on ScoutBase. This gives a comprehensive listing of many activities in Scouting. Learn all about new activities or find guidance on how to run an activity for your young people, along with resources and events for each activity.
But whatever the activity a risk assessment needs to be carried out, and for all activities which take Members away from their home area, a Home Contact must be appointed.
These factsheets provide useful guidance and advice:
FS129999 (Safety in Scouting: Safety Checks)
FS120000 (Activities - Risk Assessment)
FS120081 (One Day Activity Form)
FS120082 (Camp/Holiday Information Form)
The risk assessment pro forma from Training Module 1, may also be useful.
