Scouts victorious as St. George slays the dragon

Sunday 25th April 2010 saw over 1000 Scouts and their supporters in Leamington's Pump Room Gardens witness their champion, St. George, slay the dragon!

Every year Leamington District celebrate our patron saint, St. George.  This year we put on a fantastic afternoon full of courage and bravery, as St. George, cheered on by the Ssouts, slayed the fire-breathing dragon.

Lord Baden-Powell chose St. George to be the patron saint of Scouting, as the St. George of legend sets a good example of faith, courage and perseverance.  More than 500 Leamington Scouts, aged 6-25 years old, congregated to watch a jousting spectacular provided by the Knights of Middle England.  The hero was of course St. George!

Following a parade of Scout Flags, the Union and Scout flags we carried into the arena by knights on horseback.  One of whom was Robert Plester, a former Whitnash Scout.   Then the fan-fare played and St. George galloped in.

The crowd enjoyed 40 minutes of a spectacular show, which saw jousting skills, breath-taking fast riding and sword fighting.   Scouts cheered and booed as St. George won over his foe, the Black Knight and finally slayed the fire breathing dragon.

One of the youngest Beaver Scouts (Lauren aged 6) said ‘It was brilliant, St. George was really brave!’

District Commissioner Tim Thorpe added ‘We wanted to celebrate our patron saint and at the same time give the Scouts in Leamington an exciting activity.  We also wanted to share it with our community in Leamington and show how great Scouting is for both young people and the adults who lead them.’
