The Scout Association’s primary purpose it to develop young people, it also seeks to offer personal development opportunities to adults, both within their Scouting role and as individuals.
Why do I need to train?
As an adult accepting an appointment in the Scout Association you are required to show, within a period of up to three years, that you have the defined skills for your role. In doing this you are awarded a Woodbadge.
Once you have completed the necessary forms and met the Appointments Advisory Committee, your Local Training Manager (there is one for each District and their contact details are on this site) will work with your manager in scouting (usually the Group Scout Leader) to link you with a Training Adviser (TA) who is responsible for:
-
Helping you match your existing skills with those of your new role
-
For identifying skills gaps
-
For agreeing plans for gaining those skills
- For confirming that those skills have been successfully gained.
Do I have to attend a course?
No. When you agree your personal learning plan (PLP) with your training adviser he/she will agree with you what, if any, learning you need to undertake your role successfully.
When you have agreed a learning need your TA will advise you on the various training methods available to undertake this learning. Depending on the module you require methods range from:
One to one Small group or course delivery
Workbook DVD
E-learningPlease note: not all methods are yet available for all modules
Where are the training days held and how long will I be there?
The venue and running time of each module will be confirmed by your Local Training Manager around 7-10 days prior to the course date and details will also be published on this site. Normally the venue will be the Warwickshire Police Training Centre, Volvo, Wedgenock Lane, Warwick, CV34 5YA, however, if there is a group of you from a particular District who would like a specific module, we can usually arrange to come during the evening to a venue of your choice (provided you book it!).
As an approximate guide unless stated otherwise, modules normally last about 2 hours. The first module each day is likely to commence around 9.30am, the second session around 11.30am with a short lunch break within and the third session around 2.30pm.
How much does training cost and who pays?
There are a variety of ways a module of learning can be undertaken and you will be guided in this by your TA/ Local Training Manager. Modular training in Warwickshire is normally free (with the exception of Module 16 (Nights Away) which is residential).
Workbooks and DVDs can be ordered from the Information Centre at Gilwell (0845 300 1818), prices vary but are usually around £5. In addtion most workbooks can be downloaded from www.scouts.org.uk.
What do I need to take with me?
Training days are informal therefore uniform is not normally required. The accommodation at the Training Centre is usually pretty warm and you can park right outside.
In terms of what else to bring with you, please have your own copy of your Personal Learning Plan and something to write on and with, a folder for your handouts will also be useful.
Tea and coffee will be available during the day but if you are with us over lunchtime then you will need to bring a packed lunch.
Please contact your Local Training Manager at the email address listed on this site if you wish to discuss training opportunities or you have no TA.
